SHORT STORY: GREED BY ELLA GUY-VOGEL

Posted by About 4 Real Magazine

John lived a simple life. He’d never had much money, but he had always tried to make the best of whatever circumstances decided to impress themselves upon his life. He had married young, and now, aged thirty-four, he was still perfectly content with the way his life was going. Despite his apparent lack of wealth, he felt that he was very fortunate living with his wife and four children, whom he cared for a great deal.

He and his wife both worked very hard to earn a living. He worked as a handyman, usually with mechanical matters. He often worked at local factories and businesses, and rarely did he ever work professionally in a domestic environment, but he would often work free of charge for friends and neighbours. He would usually work two or three several hour shifts with short breaks in between, and often wouldn’t return home until past ten at night. His wife would clean the houses of richer families for a living; sometimes she would clean up to three houses most days, spending at least three hours at each one. Despite all this, they were content and comfortable with their modest existence. They would both always make sure that they took Sundays off, in order to spend time as a family.

That was, until one day he returned from work to a wife and children in abnormally high spirits, an open bottle of champagne and an official looking letter which, despite being addressed as “Private and Confidential”, had already been opened.

“John, something incredible has happened!” His wife cried out in glee, running to embrace him.

“What is it?” he asked in surprise, unaccustomed to her acting so unreserved. Unable to form proper sentences in her delight, she simply handed him the letter. She watched as his eyes flickered across the page, seemingly unable to take in what he was reading.

“My father…” He whispered, his throat suddenly dry. His wife became still, as she watched the comprehension wash over him.

“This is what you would call incredible news?” His voice was suddenly filled with anger. She looked down, slightly ashamed.

“He’d known it was coming for a long time. You know he hadn’t been very well. It was going to happen sooner or later…it was inevitable. But darling, think of the money. Think about, no more living in this god-forsaken place, no more working ten hours a day, six days a week, no more having to having to work at all. Our children could have the best education possible! We will be rich,” She reasoned. As she spoke, he could already feel his resolve beginning to crumble. After all, John knew he had been dead to his father ever since he had married his wife, who, apparently, was not of their “class”. His father was gone now, and his fortune and his business all belonged to John.

Soon after his father’s funeral, John and his family moved into his father’s house, where each person had their own bedroom, and several bedrooms to spare. There was also a lounge, a living area, a kitchen with a hatch that lead to the dining room, three bathrooms and two en-suites, two studies and a small private library. John became the manager of his father’s company, and his wife became a freelance artist and poet. Their children attended their local private school, driven to and from it everyday by a personal chauffeur. There food was cooked by a top chef, and the house and grounds were cleaned and maintained by a network of other servants.

John had been managing his father’s company for several months when he began to encounter problems with his workers. Although the annual profit of the company was already massive and constantly increasing, John still wasn’t happy with the amount of money he was receiving. He decided to lay off several hundred workers, and cut the wages of those remaining. He grew more and more rich. After a while, he began to believe that he wanted even more, and he didn’t want to be tied down to a family any longer, so he divorced his wife, using an expensive lawyer to ensure that she didn’t get a single penny of his money, and abandoned her and his children to whatever life it was that they had left. He now believed that he was free. He also believed that he was happy.

That was, until one day he returned home from work to find his home empty, and an official-looking letter marked “Private and Confidential” unopened and awaiting his attention. The letter detailed that John Smith was to be taken to court by the Workers’ Union, for corruption, and forcing his employees to work in sub-standard conditions, for below minimum wage. It also explained that one of his employees had been killed; falling from a piece of scaffolding that didn’t meet with Health and Safety’s criteria. The evidence was stacked against him, and in the end, he lost everything. His company, his home, his servants, all in order to pay for the damage his carelessness and greed had caused. He was left with nothing. His ex-wife had moved on, and was now with another man. Now John knew something he had never known before; what it really meant to be poor.

The End

INTERVIEW: WHO ARE YOU? BY LEAH BUSOW

Posted by About 4 Real Magazine

Name: Micah Frizzle

Age: 33

Background: Shepherds Bush/ West London

Role: Leader of the Cuban Boxing club

What does the club generally do?

Basically, we work with kids who have a high ability level in sport and a low level ability in sport. Anyone in the middle is pushed out. It also encourages fitness.

What made you choose this profession?

I always was good at sports and I always wanted to work with children, so I decided to put my passion of sports and love of working with children and WALA! I went back to university to study Sports Science in hopes to build my own sports academy.

Did you always want to do this?

Not really. I always liked to play sports professionally (like any boy would), but as soon as I started working with children, then I wanted to do this more so now I do!

Ever been to Cuba?

No, but if this question is based on the title of the club, then it’s not. It’s just the head coach is Cuban and he uses some old techniques from there to influence the moves we teach the kids here. I want to go to Cuba though!

What are the worst / best bits’s about running the club?

Best- Meeting people and influencing youth.

Worst- Carrying the equipment round, it gives you a stiff back!

IF I WERE PRESIDENT BY MARCEL CHINAKWE-VENN

Posted by About 4 Real Magazine

I am a 15 year old student, but things that affect the world do matter to me. And if I were president, here are some of the laws that I would pass.

1) All Homeless people are given homes, food, drink, clothes and Jobs. I would hire people to go around getting leftovers from restaurants. I would hold events where people give in their unwanted clothes and we give them to the homeless. And for jobs we would go to job offices and even some would work for us.

2) University is free. Because some people don’t come from good backgrounds but still know school is important and have aspirations and dreams and need university to make those dreams come true.

3) Anyone between 10-18 gets £30 from the Government. Because people at this age start to want stuff and ask their parents constantly so this will help the parents to save money and the child to get what they want.

4) The youngest age for driving is 16. Because around this age people go out more and need to get around and I think this is the most responsible age under 17 for people to drive. But the people who apply will need to be scrutinised to see if there liable to drive.

5) Make war illegal. I would do this bye instilling the law to my country and making sure I don’t get in a dispute with anybody to start a war. I would do this because nobody likes war it is a bad thing, and if I could stop it my country would be safer.

CUSTOMISE YOUR CLOTHES! by Leah Busow

Posted by About 4 Real Magazine

Looking through your wardrobe and finding that all your cloths are looking a bit lifeless? Dull? Devoid of colour? Got a bit of time on your hands? Minutes to spare? Well look for the answer no further!!! Customisation is a great way to personalise your clothing and accessories, and you can give it that unique touch. Check it out for yourself!

Jeans

If you're getting tired of wearing the same old boring jeans, spice them up! There are several different methods you can use to customize your own jeans. Let your personality, creativity and sense of style come through in your own custom creation.

Things you’ll need:

  • Dremel tool and attachment or sandpaper
  • Rhinestones
  • Fabric paint

Step 1: Find a pair of jeans that fit you well, or buy a pair. If you want to do lots of customization, then keep them as plain as possible.

Step 2: Do some research on what specific look you want. Decide which methods suit you best and/or easier for you to do

Step 3: Distress the jeans, if you desire. Distressing them will give it that worn-out look. You can do this by using a Dremel tool with a wide sandpaper attachment and lightly going around the front and back pocket edges and the bottom of the jeans very lightly. You can also do the knees, but some something heavy underneath, like a brick, to prevent it from going all the way through the other side. Instead of Dremel, you could use regular sandpaper or even a chess grater on the knees.

Step 4: Buy iron-on designs from a craft store and place them on the hips, pockets, cuffs, waistbands, or knees for extra colour and design. This will give you a really unique look if you spread them out evenly.

Step 5: Customize a unique design by adding rhinestones. The Bedazzle is a great tool to use, which easily snaps them on the jeans. You can create any design you want, or buy pre-made iron-on designs.

Step 6: Paint designs on with fabric paint. This option would be a good one for an artist type, not someone who can't draw a straight line.

HOW TO MAKE: PANCAKES! By Marcel Chimakwe-Venn

Posted by About 4 Real Magazine

Here is a fantastic recipe for American fully pancakes; a luscious taste and so easy to make.

Prep Time: 10mins

Cool Time: 10 mins

Ready In: 25 mins

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup milk

  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 tablespoons white sugar

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1 egg

  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

  • cooking spray

Directions

2) Combine milk with vinegar in a medium bowl and set aside for 5 minutes to "sour".

2) Combine flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl. Whisk egg and butter into "soured" milk. Pour the flour mixture into the wet ingredients and whisk until lumps are gone.

3) Heat a large skillet over medium heat, and coat with cooking spray. Pour 1/4 cupfuls of batter onto the skillet, and cook until bubbles appear on the surface. Flip with a spatula, and cook until browned on the other side.

You could add blueberries, strawberries, bananas, maple syrup or have it on the side with an English breakfast.

When done, chow down and enjoy! :-)
